Antique of the Week: Bergère Chairs

The chairs are available at Sage Eclectic Consignment.

As everyone in Kensington knows, Antique Row is one of the community’s points of pride.  Howard Avenue and its side streets are lined with shops specializing in antique furniture, rugs, vintage toys, used books and more.  This large presence in the community sparked our feature, Antique of the Week, where we will showcase a different item or curiosity each week to bring attention to pieces from the past.

This week, we’re featuring a pair of bergère chairs from the early 1900’s.  Bergère chairs were French upholstered armchairs that were designed in the mid-18th century for lounging. They were moved around one’s home instead of being permanently fixed against the wall as part of the décor.

Michel Huebner, the proprietor of , said this pair of bergère chairs is European.  They were upholstered with designer silk fabric and painted to match the fabric.  She said the chairs could serve as accent chairs in a sunroom or a little girl’s room.  She is selling them individually for $350 a piece.

Huebner is also holding a major furniture sale of three estates she is helping to clear:  a 16,000 square foot home in Annapolis and two Northwest D.C. high-end condos.  She has a warehouse in the back that holds a majority of the goods, from antiques to mid-century pieces, including sofas, sectionals, dressers, end tables, etc.  She even has a lot of vintage clothing and accessories.  She can respond to your questions by phone or e-mail.

Sage Eclectic Consignment is located at 4228-L Howard Ave. Huebner can be reached at 301-530-5723 or michel@sageconsignment.com.
