Strathmore Offers Holiday Performances

The Moscow Ballet and the Cathedral Choral Society, among others, celebrate the holiday season.

Hanukkah, the Winter Solstice, Christmas. That special and wondrous time of the year is upon us. And what better way to celebrate the holiday season than to experience the performing arts.

Thursday, Dec. 15, and Friday, Dec. 16: Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker

Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker spins the magical Christmas story of the girl who falls in love with a Nutcracker Prince. The New York Times deems it “thrilling and expansive.”

Russian dancers leap, spin and entrance audiences as they battle with an evil Mouse King and journey through the glistening Snow Forest. Moscow Ballet’s production features lavish costumes, nine hand-painted backdrops with 3-D ornamentation and fanciful, larger-than-life puppets designed by a Russian master — all set to Pytor Tchaikovsky’s celebrated score. Performances will be held at 7:30 p.m.

Tuesday, Dec. 20: Cathedral Choral Society: A Dickens Christmas

Join the Cathedral Choral Society and Charles Dickens himself for this festive celebration of Christmas. Have your picture taken with Mr. Dickens before the concert, sing along to traditional English favorites such as "The First Noel" and "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing!," experience cherished choral works and enjoy listening to Mr. Dickens reading some of his most famous works. Performance at 7:30 p.m.

Wednesday, Dec. 21: The Washington Chorus: A Candlelight Christmas

Brass, organ, percussion and the 200-voice Grammy Award-winning Washington Chorus capture the spirit of the season. This popular holiday event features Christmas classics and sing-a-longs amid luminous candlelight. Performance at 7:30 p.m.

Thursday, Dec. 22: National Philharmonic Presents Holiday Celebration with the Washington Symphonic Brass

In celebration of the Winter Solstice, Maestro Piotr Gajewski leads the critically acclaimed Washington Symphonic Brass and Percussion Ensemble in a concert for the entire family. Featured pieces from medieval and renaissance music include such classics as "Greensleeves," "O Magnum Mysterium," "I Saw Three Ships," and "Sing We Now of Christmas." Performance at 8 p.m.

Please note: Youth ages 7-17 can attend all National Philharmonic concerts at the Music Center at Strathmore free of charge. KIDS FREE tickets may be obtained in person at the Strathmore Ticket Office or by phone at 301-581-5100.
