Strathmore's Artists in Residence Unveil New Works

Show is the culmination of a six-month residency.

The mansion at Strathmore will be brimming with fine art starting tomorrow, as four local artists debut the works they completed while in residence at Strathmore.

The exhibition opens Saturday and will continue through Aug. 20. There will be an opening reception July 22.

The artists are Brittany Simms from Kensington, Minna Philips of Rockville, and Wilmer Wilson IV and Solomon Slyce from Washington, D.C.

Simms, an expiremental painter, uses acrylics and mixed-media to re-create disaster scenes, inspired by her time in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina.

Philips created surreal sketches on velum paper of the mansion's grotto. Her works are randomly mounted on a gridded window in the mansion, creating a disjointed portrait of the building.

Wilson, a sculpter, creates site-specific works using everyday materials. In the work pictured above, Wilson inflated more than 1,000 paper bags to fill a room.

Slyce takes satirical photographs that explore issues of culture and identity. He will display works from his portfolio in addition to photographs taken during his residence at Strathmore.

The works will be on display at the mansion's Gudelsky Gallery Suite, which is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
