Silver Spring Cartoon Creator Named to Forbes '30 Under 30'

Rebecca Sugar will become the first woman to create a show for Cartoon Network.

Silver Spring native Rebecca Sugar is making a splash in the world of animation. The storyboard artist, writer and composer has received praise for her work on "Adventure Time," an Emmy-nominated show on Cartoon Network.

Forbes recently named her to its "30 Under 30" Entertainment list.

Sugar graduated from Montgomery Blair High School in 2005 and participated in the Visual Arts Center at Albert Einstein High School. She received the Ida F. Haimovicz Visual Arts Award, which is given to a Montgomery County high school senior intent on pursuing a visual arts career.

What Forbes has to say about Sugar:

"Adventure Time" is one of the most innovative cartoons on TV and many of the best episodes were written by Sugar. Now she's getting her own show and will become the first woman to create a show for Cartoon Network. "Steven Universe" about magical guardians of the universe, premiers next year.

This fall, Variety highlighted Sugar and "Steven Universe" as a part of Cartoon Network's shift toward millenials.

NOW THIS is something to cheer on. Not someone who "won $5 million in a rigged lotto game." This is a real DOer, a real person using talent, skill, hard work and love of her job to do something positive. Awesome job, I'll check out the show! But take the money and run before Tax-Hike Ike finds out!

Excellent accomplishment for this individual. It's nice to know great things happen to locals; it helps inspire those students at Blair. Kudos to Rebecca, Blair and the arts program at Blair!

She went to Blair for her academics, but Rebecca and Steven (Her younger brother) both graduate from the rigorous Visual Art Center program located at Albert Einstein High School.
