Antique of the Week: Regina Pool Table from the Jazz Age

This week's antique comes from Onslow Square.

As everyone in Kensington knows, Antique Row is one of the community’s points of pride. Howard Avenue and its side streets are lined with shops specializing in antique furniture, rugs, vintage toys, used books and more. This large presence in the community sparked our feature, Antique of the Week, where we will showcase a different item or curiosity each week to bring attention to pieces from the past.

This week we’re featuring a vintage pool table at —the Regina.  Created by Brunswick and Blatt (the cushion on the table), this pool table is a signature piece from the roaring 1920s. Sandra Ellington, the proprietor of Onslow Square, said that it is complete with cue sticks, a scoring board and lamps specifically designed for billiards. It even has a slot at the end of the table to receive balls.

Ellington described the design on the legs of the table in art deco style, which was prevalent during the jazz age. Art Deco was known for its angular, symmetrical shapes such as the Empire State Building.  It symbolized a reaction against the curvy linear style of art nouveau.

Ellington said that this pool table is made of walnut and rosewood, and it’s nine feet long. You can purchase it for $18,500 at Onslow Square, which is located at 4125-4131 Howard Ave. Intersted parties can contact Ellington at 301-530-9393.
