Antique of the Week: Hand-painted Hungarian Wooden Horse

This week's antique comes from The Great British Pine Mine.

As everyone in Kensington knows, Antique Row is one of the community’s points of pride. Howard Avenue and its side streets are lined with shops specializing in antique furniture, rugs, vintage toys, used books and more. This large presence in the community sparked our feature, Antique of the Week, where we will showcase a different item or curiosity each week to bring attention to pieces from the past.

This week, we are featuring a Hungarian hand-painted wooden horse from 1923.  Charles Sutherland, one of the proprietors at , said it was given as a New Year’s Eve gift in 1924. He added that this horse is one-of-a-kind, and was not mass produced, which makes it even more special.

Sutherland said the horse is composed of hand-painted pine with a leather bridle and rope reins. It is emblematic of wooden sculptures in Hungarian art that have roots from the Gothic Period, as shown on the website of The Hungarian National Gallery. Whether this horse is supposed to be the Trojan horse is left to the imagination, but it is definitely a treasure worth buying for $2,950.

If you would like to purchase the horse, stop by The Great British Pine Mine at 4144 Howard Ave. or call Sutherland at 301-493-2565.
