Antique of the Week: Carnival Glass Lemonade Set

As everyone in Kensington knows, Antique Row is one of the community’s points of pride. Howard Avenue and its side streets are lined with shops specializing in antique furniture, rugs, vintage toys, used books and more. This large presence in the community sparked our feature, Antique of the Week, where we will showcase a different item or curiosity each week to bring attention to pieces from the past.

This week, we're featuring a carnival glass lemonade set at the Antique Market III. Marsha Levin, one of the proprietors, favors these art deco glasses for their iridescent blue, which she said is a less common color found in carnival glasses than cantaloupe.

Levin said that the art deco style was an industrialized process that was prevalent during the 1920s and '30s. She added, "It's distinctive for its geometric shapes. It's a very simpler, sleeker look” than the ornate, floral patterns during the art nouveau era that preceded it. She mentioned that carnival glass has a reflective quality to it. This lemonade set comes from the 1930s.

With six glasses and a pitcher, it’s the perfect lemonade set to cool off during the summer. It is currently being sold for $225. Antique Market III is located at 3760 Howard Ave., and the phone number is 301-942-4440.
