Antique of the Week: Berkey & Gay Cabinet

Berkey & Gay cabinet has been maintained in excellent condition to serve a multitude of purposes.

As everyone in Kensington knows, Antique Row is one of the community’s points of pride. Howard Avenue and its side streets are lined with shops specializing in antique furniture, rugs, vintage toys, used books and more. This large presence in the community sparked our feature, Antique of the Week, where we will showcase a different item or curiosity each week to bring attention to pieces from the past.

This week, we’re featuring a Berkey & Gay cabinet from the 1920’s at . Berkey & Gay Furniture Company produced furniture from the mid-1800’s until the 1940’s in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and it became known throughout the United States for its high quality craftsmanship.

Lynn Pritchard, one of the proprietors at Pritchard’s Antiques, described the cabinet as made of walnut and other exotic materials. She emphasized the great detail of the brass hardware, characteristic of Berkey & Gay. She said that the cabinet can serve a variety of purposes including an armoire, a bar or a bookcase.

The cabinet is currently on sale for $895 at Pritchard’s Antiques, which is located at 3748 Howard Ave. Interested parties can contact Pritchard's at 301-942-1661.
