A Fine Evening at Strathmore, for 'Our House'

Event held to raise funds for a new eco-friendly dorm, to house more students at the at-risk youth center.

It was a full-house gathering at , for an evening of entertainment with a purpose: to raise money for Our House, a training center and home for at-risk youth. Local dignitaries, residents and volunteers came out to support the fundraising event.

The mission of  the 18-year-old program based in Brookville, MD., (near Olney) is to teach hands-on, work-ready skills—such as carpentry, drywall and roofing—to abandoned, abused, homeless or orphaned teenage boys. The students work by day and learn academics (GED prep), along with group therapy and life skill sessions at night. They also cultivate an organic garden, harvest beehives and do community service projects on Saturdays.

The goal is to give the boys a trade and foundation, along with a chance to succeed in life. The program was given an award by Oprah Winfrey on her show in 2000.

The Strathmore fundraiser was part of an effort to raise funds to build a new, eco-friendly dorm, so the program can accept more students needing help. Silent and live auctions, along with ticket sales and donations helped raise funds as guests enjoyed musical entertainment by Strathmore's artists-in-residence.
