Would-be stars traveled to the casting call from as far away as Richmond, New York and New Jersey, according to the paper.

Commissioner Edward Hopkins said at Monday's town meeting that more than 1,000 people attended the House of Cards casting call over the weekend. He thanked Director of Economic Development Trish Heidenreich and all involved for making the event run smoothly.

Gov. Martin O'Malley visited the show's set in Harford County earlier this month, touting the economic impacts of its filming.

The Washington-set series, an adaptation of a British miniseries, tells the story of a South Carolina congressman (Kevin Spacey) with his eyes set on getting Washington's top job by any means necessary. The series also stars Robin Wright, Kate Mara and Michael Kelly.
