St. Paul's Collecting School Supplies for Needy Kids

The church will also hold a backpack build on Sunday.

The start of the school year is on the horizon, and a local church is working to help Montgomery County's families in need ease the burden of buying school supplies.

is collecting school supplies for kindergartners and first-graders until tomorrow, and you can drop them off in the Narthex at the church.

Then, on Sunday, the church is hosting a backpack build, inviting members of the community to come to Heavener Hall and stock backpacks with donated supplies. The bags will be donated to needy kids in the county before the semester starts, said Alicia Davis Cooper, one of the event's organizers.

"It's meant to be a community-building event as well a service project," Cooper said. "It's a really nice experience."

The backpack build starts after St. Paul's 10:30 service on Sunday, and lunch will be served for volunteers.

St. Paul's is asking for the following items:

  • new or "gently used" solid-color backpacks
  • pencil boxes
  • boxes of colored pencils
  • 24-packs of crayons
  • children's scissors
  • No. 2 pencils
  • large erasers
  • 4 oz. glue bottles

Cooper said the church wants solid-color backpacks to avoid having one child receive an unadorned bag while another gets, say, a Spiderman backpack.

"We don't want anybody to feel sad," she said.
