Few Lost Power During Thursday Thunderstorm

Few homes in Kensington and Wheaton were affected by the storm.

About 17,000 homes are without power in Montgomery County following a severe thunderstorm that passed through the area Thursday afternoon.

In Kensington, only about 64 Pepco customers lost power, according to the utility company's website. In Wheaton, about 22 customers lost power.

Most of the power loss seemed to be in Western Montgomery County.

Montgomery County officials are advising residents traveling through the area to be on alert for post-storm damage. The following tips were released:

  • Treat all traffic signals that are dark as if they are four-way stops.
  • Call 911 only in emergencies that threaten life or property, which includes any type of fire or serious medical condition, when there is fear for personal safety or the safety of others, or during a crime in progress.
  • Do not touch fallen or low-hanging wires of any kind under any circumstances. Stay away from puddles with wires in or near them. Do not touch trees or other objects in contact with power lines.
