Weast Recommends Crossway Become First Charter School in Montgomery County
Board of Education will vote on both applications on July 7.
After last year's application was rejected by the Board of Education, Crossway Community Inc.'s Community Montessori School is getting another chance at becoming the first charter school in Montgomery County.
Superintendent Jerry Weast, who's term ends on June 30, recommended approving Community Montessori's 2011 application to the Board of Education.
In a press release, Weast cited "significant upgrades" from the 2010 application and said while he and the panel assembled to review the applications still had "some concerns of significant weight", he believed those concerns could be overcome.
Weast recommended a second application, from Seneca Creek Public Charter School, should be denied.
If approved, Community Monterressi will be a pre-K through 3rd grade school that uses the Montessori approach. A private Montessori academy currently exists at Crossway.
Crossway Community is a non-profit that focuses on combating poverty in single mothers, located just north of Wheaton's downtown in Kensington View.
The Board of Education will vote to approve or deny both applications on July 7.
