Silver Spring Speed Camera Knocked Down, Damaged

Damages to one camera put the portable unit out of commission, police said.

A speed camera in Silver Spring was damaged over the weekend and, no, police don't think an angry, ticketed driver was the culprit.

"Possibly a group of juveniles that may be responsible," said officer Britta Thomas, a spokesperson for Montgomery County police. No one has been arrested, she said.

Whomever is behind the vandalism managed to knock three portable units down on 16th Street in downtown Silver Spring, near Georgia Avenue, sometime between Saturday, Nov. 17, and Sunday, Nov. 18.

Two of the cameras were not damaged and were put back into service on Sunday, but the third was taken away for repair, Thomas said.

Residents of the neighborhood told NBC4 that the busy street is prone to speeding vehicles.

Sixteenth Street is one of several speed camera "corridors" introduced by the police department's traffic division. Roving speed cameras patrol about 67 locations throughout the county, moving around the length of a “corridor,” as opposed to patrolling a fixed location, Patch previously reported.

I wish they would find a way to slow down traffic on 16th Street! I was scootering on it the other day going the 30 mph speed limit in northern DC & NOBODY else was. The speed cameras didn't seem to have any effect. They need many more cameras or actual pullovers or a much narrower road or something. It is unsafe.

Nicolle,
'you' wish 'they' would find a way to slow down traffic? Do you suppose these speeding cars don't have brakes? By the way, who is 'they'??
