Construction Update: Safeway in Wheaton

Jerry Ricciardi of Patriot Realty says construction is “moving along.”

Twelve stories down, five more to go for the 17-story, high-rise Safeway grocery store and apartment complex, located across from the Wheaton Metro Station at the intersection of Reedie Drive and Georgia Avenue.

“Construction is going well,” said Jerry Ricciardi, president of real estate development at Patriot Realty. “We are moving along as we should and things are going great.”

According to Ricciardi, the 58,000-square foot "urban lifestyle" Safeway is scheduled to open in early fall of 2013, with the residential buildings to follow a few months behind. The 486 units will be completed by January 2014.

The new mixed-use facility will also include a SunTrust bank, Bergman’s drycleaner and a Starbucks.

What does "urban" safeway mean exactly? is it going to be a much smaller safeway than the one in Kensington?
