Readers Speak Out on Kensington Sector Plan

More than 300 people voted in our poll.

After last week's County Council hearing on the Kensington sector plan, we asked you for your thoughts on the plan's vision for the town's future, and many of you responded.

More than 300 people voted in Patch's unscientific poll, with 75 percent saying they support the current draft of the sector plan and 25 percent opposed.

Reader Aldo Morri commented that while the plan isn't perfect, the town is in dire need of revitalization.

"The neighborhood has tremendous potential, and development does not have to come at the price of destroying its historical and 'earthy' character," Morri wrote. "I agree that Kensington shouldn't be Bethesda, or Silver Spring, but something more along those lines."

Other readers said June's town election was a referendum on the sector plan, and, because the two pro-plan candidates won, is proof that most Kensingtonians support revitalization.

"This has been debated for years now," reader Jonathan Meyers wrote. "It's time to allow the plan to take shape. We need this for the future of our town."

But reader Lydia Skloven commented that the plan is still opposed by many in the town.

"In addition, the plan has changed since the vote was held, and the losers in the vote ... did not have well-run campaigns," Skloven wrote.

The draft of the plan will next go before the County Council's Planning, Housing and Economic Development committe and later be presented to the full Council.

Mr. Morri is not a resident of Kensington, but of Capitol View Park which has boundaries bordering greater Kensington and the Town of Kensington. His opinion is must be that of a resident of Silver Spring.
