Could Bonavia Be Leaving Einstein?

Rumor has it that Bonavia will become the new head coach at Sherwood.

According to various online media reports, Einstein head football coach Mike Bonavia has accepted an offer to become the new head coach at Sherwood.

An official announcement, however, is expected to be made sometime after the April 26 spring break period.

Bonavia has compiled a 17-23 record during his four year tenure including a 4-6 mark at Einstein last year and would replace Marc Thomas who resigned after one season at Sherwood.

Bonavia is credited with helping turn around an Einstein football program that struggled before his arrival.

“He was a big part of turning the program around,” said Einstein senior Jamil Shah, a former team captain and two-year starter. “He’s helped me. He’s been a major part of my football career.”

Shah, a 5-foot-11, 245-pound lineman, blossomed into one of Einstein’s top players as a two-way starter. He’s considering several Division II offers including Shepherd and Bowie State University.

The Titans won seven games from 2001-2006 under head coaches Ethan Fields and John Mangrum. Fields endured a winless 0-9 campaign in 2009 before Mangrum compiled a 7-42 record in five seasons at the helm of the Kensington school’s varsity football program.

In 1998, the late Ed Ashwell guided Einstein to the most wins in school history, finishing the season with a 9-2 record. Einstein compiled a 29-12 mark in Ashwell’s four seasons at the helm.

Bonavia has compiled a 74-78 record in 15 seasons as a head coach in Montgomery County including a 57-55 mark at Richard Montgomery where he guided the football program from 1995-2005.
