Chevy Chase Club golfers Jim Fitzgerald and Pleasant Hughes recently claimed the Middle Atlantic Professional Golfers’ Association Pro-Assistant Championship at Woodholme Country Club in Pikesville.
The June 11 tournament ended with a "sudden death playoff" between three teams: Charlie Briggs and Alex Beach of the Burning Tree Club in Bethesda, Bob Dolan and Carla Wasienko of the Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase, and Fitzgerald and Hughes, who won the playoff after two holes.
The news release continued:
All shooting a 7-under par score of 66 (par 73), the three teams started the sudden death playoff on hole #10, a 370 yard par 4.
Briggs/Beach and Fitzgerald/Hughes stayed in the running for first place with birdies on the first playoff hole.
Wasienko’s birdie putt for her team just skimmed over the left side of the hole leaving them with a par which knocked them out of the playoff.
The two remaining teams moved on to #11, the 506 yard, dog-leg right par 5.
All players hit their third shots onto the green, so their putts would now decide the outcome.
Fitzgerald was first to putt and just missed his birdie to the right side of the hole. His partner, Hughes, was next to play and was fortunate to have had the same putt earlier in his round.
Hughes put a smooth stroke on the 15-foot, right to left breaking putt and his ball had just enough momentum to die into the cup for birdie.
Briggs was next with a 12-foot birdie putt and his missed to the left as did Beach’s 9-foot putt giving way for Fitzgerald and Hughes to take the Pro-Assistant title.
This is the first Pro-Assistant win for Fitzgerald and Hughes and the second win for the Chevy Chase Club. They will split a first place prize of $1,180.
