B-CC Girls Win, WJ Boys Lose in State Soccer Finals

Barons top Severna Park in penalty kicks; Wildcats fall to Bowie in overtime

The girls soccer team captured their fourth consecutive state championship in dramatic fashion Friday, topping Severna Park 3-2 in penalty kicks after playing to a scoreless tie through regulation and two overtime periods in the Class 4A final at the University of Maryland Baltimore County.

Junior defender Zoe Mesirow scored the game-winner on the 10th and final penalty kick, giving the Barons (14-3-2) their sixth state title in the last 11 seasons and the second that resulted from a 0-0 game.

In 2001 B-CC and Centennial played to a scoreless tie in the Class 2A final, but under the rules in place at the time both teams were named co-champions. Penalty kicks were re-instituted for championship games by the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association before the 2007 season.

In the second game of the Class 4A championship doubleheader, the boys lead for nearly the entire game but could not hold on in the closing moments, falling to Bowie 2-1 in a stunning overtime loss.

The Wildcats (17-1-1)  took the early advantage on a goal by senior Noah Sheetz-Ziegel in the second minute of play, but could not add to their lead. The Bulldogs (14-5) tied the score with just 17 seconds remaining in regulation, then won on a Moises Lazo goal a minute into overtime.
